Can taking vitamins be an effective acne care treatment remedy?
There are many different acne care treatments available today. Vitamin supplementation as a way of treating acne is not as popular as some other treatment options, but still worth considering.
First of all, the skin is the largest organ of the body and it’s important to get plenty of nutrients in our body for the skin to function properly. Deficiencies in certain vitamins can result in an imbalance that can lead to poor skin and conditions of the skin such as acne. Therefore, can taking more vitamins give skin a better appearance and get rid of acne?
Vitamins A, B complex, E, C and the minerals such as Chromium and Zinc are the most popular vitamins and minerals that have been found to reduce acne and improve skin. You are more likely to see a difference in your skin if you are lacking in a particular nutrient and you supplement your diet with extra vitamins. However, if these vitamins are known to get rid of acne or greatly improve it than is taking more of them a good thing?
Let’s start with vitamin A which serves many functions and the lack of it can cause acne. Vitamin A strengthens and maintains healthy tissue and serves as an antioxidant eliminating free radicals in the body. Most importantly vitamin A get rid of acne by reducing sebum production in the skin. Amounts of vitamin A such as 10,00 IU to 25,000 IU’s has been effectively used a an acne treatment in some patients. Taken in large quantities can result in side effects. Therefore, mega dosing should only be done under the supervision of a medical professional. Pregnant women should not consider mega doses of vitamin A because it poses too great of a health risk.
Stress is a known factor to cause acne and the B-complex vitamins are important for lowering stress in the body and maintaining healthy skin tone. Some people have taken large doses of pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 as a way to clear acne successfully. Vitamin B5 is known to reduce sebum and control oil in the skin as a way of resolving acne. Again, taking large quantities may not be good and can lead to many undesirable side effects, such as upset stomach, dry skin, diarrhea, headaches, and potential hair loss. Treatment using vitamin B5 should be monitored closely because taken in large amounts it can lead to other vitamin deficiencies that can be more dangerous to your health. To make sure your getting the right balance of B vitamins it is recommended that you stick with a B-complex vitamin in order to avoid the negative side effects associated with taking B5 alone or in high quantities.
Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E are used in acne treatments to help with healing, support the immune system and prevent infection. Taken in the right amounts these vitamins are important in healthy skin and will work to heal acne and prevent future acne outbreaks.
Lastly, getting the right minerals is also important for healthy skin. Surprisingly, studies have shown that more than 80% of people suffering from acne are lacking the mineral Chromium. Chromium is used in the body to help maintain the balance of insulin. By keeping sugar levels in balance you can decrease oil production in the skin and prevent acne from occurring. Zinc is also important because it helps maintain the hormonal balance in the body and therefore reducing the occurrence of acne flare-ups.
It is true many people have reduced or even cured their acne by using vitamin supplementation as an acne treatment. However, before you supplement your diet with vitamins, there are many things to consider and you should also realize that taking more than the average dosage of vitamins can make acne worse in some cases, but it can be harmful to your health. A multi-vitamin or a vitamin designed specifically for acne in mind is generally harmless and will promote healthy skin, but you should always do your research and speak to a health care provider to weigh all your option and potential side-effects.
